Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Minor Spoilers
I remember this movie well-- Linn Yann was an intelligent girl who had had far too much discipline in her early life. and when she won the regional spelling bee everyone in the movie seemed so surprised. IMHO, wouldn't her background actually make her MORE likely to succeed in events like this, rather than less likely? (not to mention that kids tend to pick up new languages very quickly to begin with)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Yann's are personal friends
I grew up with the Yann family and clearly remember them when they could not speak English when we were first introduced as children in a Sunday school class.
Before I knew it, me and my sister were throwing Linn a "good luck" party before she departed to go to Washington D.C. for the big Bee.
Just from knowing them personally, this movie is a must see! Linn does a cameo at the beginning of the film in the camp scene.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of my favorites
Boy, do I EVER remember this movie! I was about 10 when it came out and I remember loving it so much. I've been looking for this movie for awhile, but I couldn't exactly remember the title. I knew it had the words, "Spell and Freedom", but that was it. I'm happy my determination paid off. :) It was inspirational enough for me to have such an impact to remember this almost 20 years ago. I do hope they'll release it on DVD soon. There are just too many movies out there that haven't had their turn on ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A young Khmer(Cambodian) girl, Linn Yann
Very inspiring movie. I saw this movie in the 80's on TV. Despite the terrible war in her country, she and her family escaped the nightmare and later settled in north America. This Cambodian girl and her family knew nothing about US and english. Linn Yann fought hard to win the Spelling Bee Contest.

If you have children, this true story of Linn Yann can be a good role model.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Disney Flick!! Let Freedom Ring!!
This is a great disney film about a Cambodian Family seeking refuge in the United States. It really make you appreciative of the freedom we have in this country. It's a must see!!
