Amazon.com essential video: This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank), and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet, and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan. --Tom Keogh

Rating: - Still enjoyable after all these years
The movie itself still rocks. The Blu-Ray edition only has a lot of different commentaries for extras - no bloopers and deleted scenes, but it's still worth the money.

I bought this in the hope that I'd be getting an unedited version of DIE HARD. I was disappointed to find that even the Region 1 version of this classic movie has had dialogue cropped out that I specifically remember being there in the VHS version of the same move. The most noticeable first scene where these crops turn up in the scene where John McLean arrives at the airport and in the original movie release says "F*N Californians", but in the edited version its just "California". It's a shame ... Read More

Die Hard is the action movie that reinvented action. Before Die Hard there really wasn't any action heroes; I mean besides Rambo, Die hard created the Epitome of the new era of action. And this can be proven with the many imitations that followed Die Hard's success. Such titles include Speed (Die Hard on a bus) Under Siege (Die Hard on a boat) and Passenger 57 (Die Hard on a plane) all of these movies were made prior to the success of Die Hard
Die Hard's story is known by practically ... Read More

They made the dialog so low and the sound effects so high, you can't listen to the dialog without having gun scenes disturb all your neighbors. You can't turn the gun sounds low without not being able to hear the dialog. Truly bad disc made unwatchable by poor picture and poor sound.
